The Dos and Don’ts of Double Cleansing

The Dos and Don’ts of Double Cleansing

Double cleansing is a skincare technique that ensures your face is thoroughly clean, but doing it right is key to avoiding product build up and damaging your skin barrier. Let’s break it down...

DO:

  • Start with an Oil-Based Cleanser: This step dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum - look for cleansers with nourishing oils like jojoba or almond. Add the product straight onto dry skin and massage it in, then add water to start breaking down any make-up or products. Wipe off with a clean facial cleansing towel.

  • Follow with a Water-Based Cleanser: A gel or foam cleanser removes sweat, dirt, and residual impurities. Choose a gentle formula to avoid stripping your skin.

  • Use Lukewarm Water: Hot water can irritate and dry out your skin, while cold water might not effectively remove oils.

  • Double Cleanse at Night: This is when your skin needs it most after a day of exposure to pollutants and products such as SPF.

DON’T:

  • Overdo It: Double cleansing more than once a day can strip your skin of its natural oils. If you have a dry skin type you may benefit from cleansing only at night time.

  • Use Harsh Cleansers: Avoid products with alcohol or sulfates that can dry out your skin. If you're using a cleanser with an active ingredient, such as salicylic acid, this counts as exfoliation so be sure to only use this type of cleanser once per week.

  • Scrub Aggressively: Be gentle to prevent irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. Use a soft facial cleansing towel to protect your skin barrier.

When done correctly, double cleansing leaves your skin refreshed and prepped to absorb the rest of your skincare products.
